Thank you for considering me to help you with your exploration of mindfulness. I have trained to deliver the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction 8 week Course with Bangor University Centre For Mindfulness Research and Practice. MBSR is the format of therapeutic mindfulness created by Jon Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he founded its world-renowned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic (in 1979), and the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society (in 1995).
Dr. Kabat-Zinn received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from MIT in 1971 with the Nobel Laureate in physiology and medicine, Salvador Luria. Dr. Kabat-Zinn's research between 1979 and 2002 focused on mind/body interactions for healing, on various clinical applications of mindfulness meditation training for people with chronic pain and/or stress-related disorders, on the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on the brain and how it processes emotions, particularly under stress, and on the immune system; on the use and effects of MBSR with women with breast cancer and men with prostate cancer; on patients undergoing bone marrow transplant; with prison inmates and staff; in multicultural settings; and on stress in various corporate settings and work environments.
In 1998, he and his colleagues published a research paper demonstrating in a small clinical trial, a four-fold effect of the mind on the rate of skin clearing in patients with psoriasis undergoing ultraviolet light therapy: [Kabat-Zinn et al, Psychosomatic Medicine 60:625-623 (1998)]. Another study [Davidson, Kabat-Zinn, et al. (2003)], showed positive changes in brain activity associated with more effective emotional processing under stress, and in immune function in people taking an MBSR course in a corporate work setting in a randomized clinical trial. In 2008, he published, with Dr. David S. Ludwig of Children's Hospital, an article in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) called Mindfulness in Medicine.
There is now an immense amount of research study that has been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness in the benefit of mental and physical health.

What will we cover?
We will cover the core syllabus of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction 8 week course This includes mindfulness of breathing and body scan meditations, breathwork breathing space and mindful movement, inquiry and discussion of our personal experiences in practise. Mindfulness is applied to life and experience and we learn to work with difficulty.
How much home practice will I be asked to do?
Mindfulness meditation is a skill that requires commitment and daily practice to develop. To get the full benefits from the course you will need to set aside a regular time to do home practice of up to 45 minutes per day. If you think that this is going to be difficult for you please discuss this with me before you enrol.
As well as our home practise acentral part of the learning takes place in discusssion and inquiry between is, in our group. For this learning to take place it is essential that the group environment is comfortable, friendly and supportive. I see it as a key part of my role to facilitate this environment. Please don't feel intimidated we may participate when we feel comfortable and be quiet when we wish to.
For the wellbeing of all participants I ask all clients to fill out an evaluation which covers states of recent physical and mental health and importantly allows you to share with me any significant life events that may have taken place in the last year or historically which may have a bearing on your experience in mindfuness practise.
Our course is supervised for best practice; complete client anonymity is maintained during this process. The experience of a senior practitioner in reference may prove helpful in my delivery to give you the best experience of MBSR.
